  1. what's the general, young people's, vibe around this? Is there general respect? Are Australians more gung-ho - in the way Americans are?...despite being a layed back people?

  2. ...young people's vibe is very supportive on ANZAC day. There's a dawn service which is attended by 1000s! There's an anzac march which is always huge. Cath's grandpa always used to march even into his 90s. There's also a bit of a young peoples trend to go to Anzac cove in Turkey..so generally very respectful. Glad to say patriotic more than nationalistic...except for the morons of course!!!

  3. "patriotic more than nationalistic"....good way to put it. That's very cool!

It was tricky to be patriotic in the UK without being nationalistic, when Thatcher was in power...or was it just that I was younger then? Can't decide. Is it also that knowing ourgrandparents' story makes us proud, if a bit ambivalent? It does worry me that modern wars do not seem as black and white as a fight against Nazis.

I suppose I want to commemorate WW2 without seemingly supporting wars fought in my name in Afghanistan, Iraq and now Libya.
